Change for This Week's Meeting, o9/26/o8

Our Projection Workshop is this Friday (o9/26/o8) from 11:40am – 12:30pm. The meeting will carry on like a regular meeting, except that it will be held in the grass outside Shusterman Hall. This patch of grass is next to the construction on the back side of Speakman Hall; on the corner of Liacouras Walk and Berks Mall. Bring blankets or something to sit on if you can!

Aside from this week’s meeting, all of our future meetings will be held in Speakman Hall, room 114. As always, the meetings will be held on Fridays from 11:40am – 12:30pm.

See you there!

Note: If you have not yet renewed your dues: Renewing members are eligible to save money on their Competent Leadership book if they pay their renewal dues by this Friday’s meeting. Dues to Toastmasters International is $35, regardless of when they are paid. However, the Competent Leadership book is $5 for renewing members before Sept 30. After Oct 1, the book will be $10. Also, you don't get to contribute to your team's points if you're not a member!

SPO FAIR UPDATE

Hello current and FUTURE Toastmasters,

We hope you had a great summer. We expected today's event to be great, but it turned out super-great! We had over 40 students interested in Toastmasters and we're excited to see all 40, AND their friends at the next meeting. There were also past members that are very excited to join again.

We just want to thank all whom came over to our booth and all those individuals Alli and Khiem dragged over to the table. The reason why we heavily sponsor this organization is because we truly believe it will help you not in your career, but your life. Not only do we sponsor it, but TEACHERS within the business school. Aside from teacher recommendation, if you ask any Toastmasters, they will provide you with a positive testimony about how fun and beneficial the organization have been.

Benefits

1. Learn how to communicate WELL to top leaders. All organizations within Fox AND outside of Fox are great because they're meant to tailor to your majors and interest. What the organizations do is provide you with information about the industry and the companies. Though that is good, the student professional organizations fall short on helping you COMMUNICATE these information. Toastmasters help you become an AMAZING speaker. Why amazing? Because you have to be amazing to become a certified public speaker.

An amazing speaker is someone who understands their audience, communicates their information and findings well, and holds the listeners' interests. An amazing speaker is also someone who believes in the content of their speech, and understands how to use diction and syntax correctly to not only inform but ILLUSTRATE an unforgettable image.

2. FUN. All other organizations tend to bring in industry leaders where you come in, sit down, and is left to fend for yourself when networking with the leaders. That sounds tiring, especially after a morning of classes.

Toastmasters is different, we have meetings outside sometimes, our speech changes weekly and from people to people. Since the speakers get to choose what he or she would like to talk on, you know the topic will be interesting because they're interested in the topic. We also have game nights or nights where we meet up to have dinner, followed by game. We ALSO have groups within the organization that competes with each other throughout the semester, where prizes are involved for the winners.

3. Great networking! Toastmasters isn't exclusive to just Temple. We are an INTERNATIONAL organization, so if you go to the website, or ask one of the officers, we could find TOP companies locally that also hold the meeting so you can attend them. Many times, top leaders like VPs would attend these meetings. Alli, our president, attended meetings at Blue Shield Blue Cross and she was confident that if she wanted to get a job, she would be well ahead of the line. Also, if you were to travel abroad or to another city, there may be a Toastmaster there that you could attend!

Not only external networking, but also great internal networking. With teams, you get to familiarize yourself with communicating among peers, and also knowing cross-majors. With ranges from Freshmen to Seniors, we have a great forsting system for those who need help or guidance through their college or career life.

4. Flexible Schedules!. We understand that there might be a student professional organization during the same time that you're equally interested in or that you may have a class, catch a train, or go to a job. What we're doing this semester is taking that into consideration and setting up a SECOND or THIRD meetings within the week so that you can get the help you need when you need it.

We understand that you want to be a certified public speaker as soon as you can so you could put it on your resume, and we try to accomodate schedules so you can do that.

Also, if you have to give a presentation in class and a Toastmaster member is in the same class, or a Toastmaster is available to come to your class, that could be considered a speech if qualified. There's great opportunities for you to become a certified public speaker!

5. Build Leadership!. Aside from being a good public speaker, we also help build leadership. We have a new program, similar to the public speaker that will help you build your leadership skills. There are also great opportunities within Toastmasters for you to become leaders, especially since we will be having more meetings within the week. With the team dynamics, you will also be responsible for try to foster an encouragement environment for the team to win.

6. You can bring a friend!. We understand that you might be interest but you're scared to attend by yourself. We hope you still come because we're all very friendly and we try to make it the most fun and comfortable setting as possible. But, if you're still shy and meek, which we promise will change, you can bring a friend! AND the friend doesn't have to be within FOX, the friend could be from any other school with any other major outside of business. Who knows, maybe bringing a friend will help your team. (HINT HINT)

7. Most Cost Effective! We would like to consider ourself non-profit. What that means is that our intentions are for the benefits of those around us and those that are part of the organization. The membership fees goes to the membership required by Toastmaster International, along with the materials that you will get. The $50 membership fee is for two semesters, and the next annual membership after is then reduced to $35. The membership fee also goes to our nightly event where we would go out to dinner to meet up to play games, where snacks and food will be provided.

We also try to get sponsors from local eateries to provide food for us free-of-charge when we can. We think in the process of growth and development, it should be a positive experience.

8. Fun Fundraisers. This year, we will start fundraisings to help certain organizations, such as cancer research, and to ensure the cost of membership is as low as possible. We have a lot of great ideas that will be fun! One of the ideas is since we are Toastmasters, and students normally rush to class, we can sell toasts as breakfast for students in the hallway. This is also an opportunity to help you practice and develope your sales and organization skill.

9. AMAZING Resume Builder. On your resume could read "Certified Public Speaker." As a business, that will stand our among the seas of experience you have on there. Toastmasters is also an international organization, which is recognized and supported all over the world. If a recuiter sees that Toastmaster is an organization you're in, you'll be ahead of the other applicants.

10. We Care!. We try to learn your names and provide tailored feedbacks to your strength and area of improvements. At first, the environment might be foreign to you because no one has ever directly reached out to help and encouraged you before, but you'll get used to it after a while.

With over 10 benefits, there is no reason you're not a member already! We're excited to see old, new, and soon-to-be new members at our next meeting, Friday, September 12, Room 214.

Please check this website for updates because this will be our main communication channel, aside from email. See you soon!
